2010 Global tour for Melbourne Cup trophy

The Melbourne Cup trophy has just set off on a massive 220 day journey around the world. The 2010 global tour is the celebration of 150 years. The 150th Melbourne Cup has started already with this historic journey of the cup.

The Cup will travel to 10 international cities around the world and also 32 Australasian destinations. It will end up back in Melbourne in time for the Melbourne Cup day. The race that stops a nation is held on the first Tuesday in November every year.

It will go to cities like Tokyo, Los Angeles, London and Dubai. The cup is known as the "Loving Cup" and features three handles.

The cities it will travel to have a special meaning. In Tokyo it will be reunited with the 2006 Melbourne Cup Winner called Delta Blues.

When the cup travels to Australia and New Zealand, it will visit towns that have become made the cup race so famous. The race which started back in 1861 and won firstly by Archer has just reached its 150th year.

Greats like the Damien Oliver and Sheila Laxon have sent off the cup at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne on Tuesday. This year the cup has been remodelled to look like how it was back in 1930 when it was won by the famous Phar Lap. Taking 250 hours to make the cup is worth $150K and is made from 18ct gold.

Melbourne is going to be host of one of the biggest sporting events ever this year in 2010. The race that stops a nation has just gotten so much more special.
